Through the eyes of an American expat in Iceland.

  • Question: Hi Bullet!

How goes? Hows Vik? Are you still in Vik? Let me vicariously live in Iceland! - soupandsandwich
  • Answer:

Hey dude! Good to hear from you! I stopped using Tumblr because i realized it’s just a bunch of people who steal your photos and never give credit, so I got sick of that happening. If you want to follow me, I update my blog a lot now:

I’m still in Vik but I will be leaving in two weeks. Hope you are well! :-D

What Volcano?

A poorly executed video on the volcano situation here in South Iceland.

April 29 is International Dance Day, and we were treated to a performance by the Vík cheerleaders in exchange for some juice. I thought it was pretty good, but the chickens made a mad dash from it.

I picked my five favorite submissions and drew a name out of a hat.
I also picked a runner up, since I really liked a couple of the answers. The runner up also gets a sampling of candy and another small surprise.
vinlendingur, you win runner-up!
Congratulations! Please send me your address and I will ship your package on Monday.

Today is the last day for you to enter in the 100th post candy contest. You have until midnight GMT. Remember that the five BEST answers get added to the pot and one lucky winner will receive a surprise package from Iceland. Make sure you post your answer on the 100th post, or send me a message if for some reason you can’t add a reply. Good luck!

Icelandic Candy, Part 3: Risa Þristur
Wrapper: I have to admit, this wrapper scared me. I sent someone else to the store with vague instructions to pick up any Icelandic candy (except for the kinds I had already reviewed, of course) and she came back with this. It looks like Lisa Frank designed this while nursing a bad hangover. I had such low hopes based on the packaging that I told my friend it was perfect. After all, I have to review a bad candy at some point, right? Oh well. Risa Þristur means Big Three. There is no other explanation on the package except the ingredients, which include gelatin and treacle syrup, which added to my low expectations.
Candy: I was shocked. You can’t tell from the photo, but there are three layers of candy in this. It’s chocolate, licorice, and possibly a fudge-type material. It’s soft and a little chewy and really super-awesome. This would be a good introduction to someone who is learning to like licorice, because the flavor is mild and overwhelmed by the chocolate, which is intensely sweet. I loved it, but I didn’t find it outstanding in the world of Icelandic candy. The same ingredients keep popping up over and over, which is great if you happen to like those things, but not great for variety. Still, I give it high marks.
Risa Þristur: 9.5/10

  • Answer:

Whoops, sorry about that! Comments should be open to everyone who is following me now. Go ahead and submit on the 100th post. Thanks!

For my 100th Tumblr post, I´m having a contest where YOU can win something. An actual, tangible thing that will be shipped to you in the mail! Wowza!
HOLY DANG! A CONTEST!! Pay attention, y’all!
Win a box of Tópaz candy (not the one shown here. It’s been in my purse for too long and that would be gross…), plus a mystery Icelandic candy of my choice (it will be one of my favorites), and probably one other thing that I haven’t decided on yet, but will be adorable and Icelandic.
Here are the rules:
1. You must be following me. I don’t care if you follow me just for this contest and then unfollow me the second it’s over, but for the minimum duration of the contest, you have to be following me. You may also refer your friends to my Tumblr so they can participate too.
2. Leave a comment on this posting telling me ONE reason you love Iceland, and ONE thing you would really like to do/see if you could only do one thing while you were in Iceland. You may also tell a story about a time you visited Iceland. Keep submissions about 500 words or less, please.
3. You must never have lived in Iceland (any time more than 3 months), and currently be living outside of Iceland to participate.
4. The contest ends on Friday, April the 8th at midnight GMT. I will take the 5 BEST submissions and pick one at random for the winner.
